Newsome Educational Garden Dedication
Richard (Dick) Newsome, Biology Professor Emeritus at Beloit College, was the driving force behind the formation of the Rock County Conservationists in the late 1980’s (as well as one of the founders of Welty). Dick envisioned a local organization devoted to public education on conservation issues specific to Rock County but applicable to the larger world.
In the spring of 2015, Dick retired from active involvement on the RCC board. Since then, the current RCC Board members have been working on a plan to honor and commemorate Dick’s involvement with a prairie garden that would be dedicated to Dick’s contributions and a monument to his legacy.
Join us on Friday, July 14th, 2017 at 4:30 pm, to name the native prairie garden in front of the Big Hill Center as the Richard Newsome Educational Garden. The ceremony will include the unveiling of a granite monument engraved with a dedication to Dick and his contributions to the environmental movement.
The ceremony will begin at 4:30 pm with a reception and light refreshments. The actual dedication will begin at 5:00 pm, and the reception will continue afterwards.
