Rock River 5K | 2021 @ Welty Environmental Center

Rock River 5K | 2021

The Rock River 5K | 2021

Let’s raise funds for Stateline environmental education by traveling the length of the Rock River 515km (320mi), virtually!

The Rock River (known as Sinnissippi by the Sauk and Fox nations) starts in east-central Wisconsin and flows southwest to the Quad City of Illinois and Iowa, where it joins the Mississippi River. It forms one of the borders of Big Hill Park, where Welty Environmental Center is located, and all our water activities occur in its watershed.

Choose a time and place from Aug. 23-Sept. 20, and walk/run/bike/paddle/swim 5k (3.1 mi). Feel free to go longer (or shorter), whatever works for you! If you’d like to complete your distance along the Rock River itself, there are lots of options along The Rock River Trail.

Send us your distance and a photo (if you’d like) when you’re done, and we’ll post them weekly and keep track on a map of the Rock River.

A big Thank You to Beloit Even Start Family Literacy Program, Brennan Steil S.C., Brownfield Environmental, Collins and Henderson LLP, the Carroll Agency, Gilbank Construction, Teachers Credit Union, and Zeeland Farm Services for their sponsorship.

REGISTRATION:

  • FEE: $35 Families; $20 FWEC adults, $25 non-members; $10 students
  • Register below (website form) and receive your insulated water bottle in the mail.
  1. Do I have to run the 5K?
You can do a 5K in whatever manner you’d like–run, walk, treadmill, bike, paddle, and even swim! Our goal is to get participants enjoying the outdoors and, collectively, traveling the length of the Rock River (515 km/320 mi). You may also go shorter or longer than a 5K. As long as you track your miles and let us know how far you went, your miles count toward our goal!
  2. Do you have any suggestions on where to run/bike/paddle?
You can participate in any location you like, but we encourage you to complete your distance somewhere along the Rock River corridor if possible! See here for more information on trails and great paddling adventures in the area: https://rockrivertrail.com/
  3. When do I need to complete the 5K?
You can participate in this virtual 5K event at any time. The official registration is from August 23 to September 20, 2021, to receive a water bottle and join our virtual community. You can participate in any location you like, but we encourage you to complete your distance somewhere along the Rock River corridor, if possible! See here for more information on trails and great paddling adventures in the area: https://rockrivertrail.com/
  4. Will there be in-person events this year?
Yes! We will have a Family and Friends bike ride at Beckman Mill on August 28, 2021, at 9 AM. We also will be leading a Prairie to Tributary 5K hike at the Welty Environmental Center on September 19, 2021, at 1 PM. Pre-registration is required for both events and you must be signed-up for the 5K to participate (register and pay on the 5K event page, and then sign-up for the individual event).
  5. Do I need to record my time?
No, this virtual event is a 5K of any type – run, walk, bike, paddle, swim, etc. Take your time and enjoy the Rock River watershed!
  6. How do I let Welty know that I completed the 5K?
We would love to see pictures of how you completed the #WeltyRockRiver5K on Facebook or Instagram! Please use the hashtag #WeltyRockRiver5K. You can also email your pictures to development@weltycenter.org. You can use the Facebook Event Frame, which you can find on Welty Environmental Center’s Facebook page!
  7. How and when will I receive my official Welty Event water bottle?
Individual participants will receive an insulated water bottle, and Families will receive two bottles. There will be two in-person pickup dates at the Welty Center for water bottles on September 1st and 14th from 10 AM-1 PM. You can also pick up bottles if you sign up for an in-person event or request your bottles to be mailed to you ($4 fee per bottle for shipping).
  8. Where do the funds raised from this event support?
The proceeds from this fundraiser will support Welty’s mission to provide leadership in environmental education by equitably engaging the diverse residents of the Stateline region with activities that foster an appreciation of nature and promote environmental stewardship.
