Steve Apfelbaum: Nature’s Second Chance (Prairie Lecture #1)

Join us for the first talk of our Big Hill Prairie Lecture series to learn more about the ecosystems that are supported by the City of Beloit’s largest city park. Thanks to a generous grant from the Alliant Energy Foundation, we are able to offer these talks to the public free of charge.

Steven Apfelbaum is one of the leading ecological consultants in the U.S., providing insight and design solutions at the intersection of ecological systems and developed land uses. This talk is drawn from his award-winning book Nature’s Second Chance; Restoring the Ecology of Stone Prairie Farm and will focus on his ongoing efforts on his farm and through his consulting firm Applied Ecological Services to promote the creation of a land ethic. This is the idea that we are all members of a land community and can appreciate the value of efforts to restore and maintain healthy ecosystems in our region’s natural areas, as well as across the globe.

Apfelbaum is a frequent keynote speaker and educator at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, the University of Paris, the Rockefeller Foundation Colloquium in Italy, and many others. In addition, He has authored many studies, papers, books, and ecological restoration plans. Apfelbaum’s book, Nature’s Second Chance (Beacon Press), was one of the “Top 10 Environmental Books of 2009” by the NY Times. His book, Restoring Ecological Health to Your Land (Island Press), coauthored with Dr. Alan Haney, is the first comprehensive ‘how-to’ restoration instructional guide and workbook for landowners interested in sustainable natural landscape.
