The History of Beloit’s Crown Jewel: Big Hill Park

Join Beloit College Archivist, Fred Burwell, to hear about the fascinating history of Big Hill Park.

In this free program we’ll talk about the early history of the park, from Beloit College Professor, James J. Blaisdell’s initial vision through later controversy over disposition of the land. We’ll also examine well over a century of activity at the park, including the early 20th century festival held annually by Beloit College known as “Big Hill Day,” the stonework constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, the famous ski jump towering over the hill, and the motorcycle climbs, as well as the recent move to Big Hill by the Welty Environmental Center.

The Friends of Welty Environmental Center’s annual meeting will follow the talk, which all are invited to attend, as well.

Please reserve a spot by calling 608-362-6212 or emailing info@weltycenter.org.
