We are excited to partner with The GLOBE Program, the National Science Foundation, and the Nelson Institute for Climatic Research to bring a week of citizen science camp to the stateline area for intermediate and high school students ages 12 to 18 who have not yet completed a semester of college.
Join us at the Welty Environmental Center located in Big Hill Park in Beloit, WI, for a week of discovery. We will learn Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) protocols designed by NASA for students to assist them in the collecting and reporting data on earth systems: atmosphere, biosphere, pedosphere, and hydrosphere. We will become citizen scientists assisting NASA!
There is something for everyone. For those who love chemistry, there is water and soil testing. For those interested in geology, there is sediment composition. Plant lovers will enjoy aging trees and measuring canopy cover. Animal people will take a closer look at the macroinvertebrate populations of Goose Creek. Meanwhile others may lay out in the sun tracking cloud cover. Regardless of interest, we will find what sparks your curiosity and assist NASA in the process.
While exploring the wide range of data collection protocols, we will design experiments that require field data collection to answer a question about one of earth’s systems (see past projects). We’ll take what we’ve learned and create a brief presentation for the end of the week’s celebration!
Join us for this week of science fun and become a GLOBE Citizen scientist!
