Wisconsin Water Week: Wading in Water Education

“Wading in Water Education: A Discussion on Connecting Students to Waterways”

Wednesday, April 19, 2023

3:30-4:30 PM CST

About the Event

Join Darien Becker in a virtual discussion on how K-12 teachers, STEM coaches, parents, and mentors can further engage their students in water science education. This webinar will discuss available programs (nation- and world-wide) to directly connect students to citizen science research, professional mentorship, networking opportunities, and more.

We will highlight other curriculum resources as well as showcase examples of Welty Environmental Center’s water science programs implemented through education, investigation, and recreation. Our hope is to support the network of educators in southeast Wisconsin and beyond as we continue to provide our students with the best learning opportunities available. This informal discussion will allow for participants to share their experiences and learn from each other.

This webinar is in conjunction with the Wisconsin Lakes and Rivers Convention (otherwise known as Wisconsin Water Week), hosted by the Wisconsin Lakes and Rivers Partnership. The meeting will be recorded, so everyone who registers will receive a copy of the recording after the event.

From the Wisconsin Lakes and Rivers Partnership

Water is fundamental to Wisconsin’s identity. Wisconsin Water Week is a time for everyone to learn more about what’s happening with our precious water resources and how to get involved in protecting and restoring them. In addition to the Wisconsin Lakes and Rivers Convention in Stevens Point, Water Week will offer numerous local, regional, and statewide opportunities for people to connect and engage with others on water-related issues.

All events and resources will be shared on the Wisconsin Water Week website: https://wisconsinwaterweek.org/

About the Presenter

Darien Becker has been the Environmental Educator at Welty Environmental Center since 2021, where she helps with curriculum development, serves as a WELCOME internship research advisor, and runs programs such as field trips, camps, and after-school programs. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Biology at Cornerstone University in Michigan, where she studied grassland management effects on bird diversity. After graduation, she traveled across the Midwest and studied grassland birds in the Flint Hills of Kansas and tallgrass prairies of Oklahoma. She also spent a year as a naturalist in coastal South Carolina, teaching K-12 students about topics such as barrier island formation, maritime forest ecology, and herpetology.

Darien received her Master of Science degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Resources from West Virginia University, where she studied the effects of land use practices on freshwater turtle abundance, movement, and heavy metal bioaccumulation. You can find some of her published works in Jalaplavit (pages 29-39), Ecology and Evolution, Diversity (MDPI), and Wetland Science & Practice (pages 72-75). Darien loves to share her passion for wetland ecology, reptiles, and birds with anyone she works with. When not working, Darien loves learning (currently knitting and piano); hiking, kayaking, and birding with her husband; and listening to audiobooks.
