The Welty Environmental Center (WEC) is a non-profit educational organization, dedicated to providing the Wisconsin-Illinois stateline area with experiences in nature, leadership opportunities and thoughtful consideration of environmental issues for children, families and adults. Over the last year, the WEC provided educational experiences for almost 9,000 people, including students from 30 different schools
FTE: Negotiable. Minimum 26 total hours total for internship. Partnership with school for credit
is possible.
Pay: Unpaid
Time: Flexible schedule varies based on program needs and intern availability.

Department: Programs
Department Description:The Programs Department creates and delivers engaging outdoor recreational activities and hands-on science based field trips for pre-K through 12 students and adults in the Stateline Area and surrounding counties.
Center Description:
The Welty Environmental Center is located in the 190-acre Big Hill Park in Beloit. The center partners with area schools and organizations bringing more than 10,000 people annually to the park. The park features three primary biomes of prairie-oak savannah, Deciduous Forest, and River Front.
Position Summary:
The Welty Ecology and Education Intern is primarily a learning position. The intern will learn how to assist the Welty Environmental Center based on their interests and the current need of the center. Some options include programming for camps, libraries, and the public, administration, social media and writing, accounting, curriculum design, graphic design, land stewardship, and animal ambassador care.
Required Qualifications:
- Completion of two High School level science classes
- Criminal background check (if 18 and programming with children)
- Able to work independently and in collaborative situations
- Strong computer, communication, and organizational skills
- Ability to lift 20 to 40 pounds
- Ability to walk 2 to 3 miles at one time
- Reliable Transportation
Preferred Qualifications:
- College level course work in Ecology, Earth Sciences, or Education
- Summer Camp Experience
- Experience in the environmental and educational fields
- Strong background in ecological and earth sciences, and teaching
- Loves working with people of all ages and being outdoors
- Good program planning and program development skills
- Passion for environmental education and conservation
