Meet our 2023 Summer Interns!

We are so happy to kick off the summer season by welcoming our 2023 summer interns! Together, this team will bring nature education to the Stateline community through library and afterschool programs with our summer outreach educator Raven Regenold (2021 summer camp educator and 2022 WELCOME intern). Check out our program calendar for more details and we hope to see you at an event!

Our Summer interns (l to f) Kylie, Addie, and Geneva come to Welty from UW-Whiteater, Hononegah HS, and Beloit College.

[pullquote class=”right”]Welcome to Kylie, Addie, and Geneva…[/pullquote]Kylie Abbott is currently a student at UW-Whitewater, pursuing a degree in biology with an ecology and evolution concentration with a minor in environmental studies. Kylie has great interest in the importance of native flowering plants and loves participating in No Mow May. Her hope for the internship is to get experience in environmental education and meet people who have similar career paths. When she’s not running programs with Welty, she enjoys reading romance novels, hiking Big Hill Park in Beloit as well as near the Sugar River, and spending time with her Boston Terrier named Sarge and leopard gecko named Steve.

Addie Plesic is a rising senior at Hononegah Community High School, where she enjoys running on the cross country team. While training, Addie loves running through forested areas like the Hononegah Forest Preserve, Kieselburg Forest Preserve, and Stone Bridge Trail. This internship opportunity is exciting for Addie as it will help her develop a deeper understanding of the natural areas that she runs through. She is cognizant of water pollution problems in the Rock River near her high school and is very interested in the process of testing water quality. She also looks forward to learning alongside the campers who come to Welty over the course of the summer. At home, she has two yorkiepoos named Dunkin and Cocoa.

[pullquote class=”left”]…we are so grateful for your help![/pullquote]Geneva Halland has a science Associate’s degree from Rock Valley College and is currently attending Beloit College after transferring from UW-Milwaukee. At Beloit, she is majoring in environmental geology, where she is very interested in learning more about seeking solutions for ground subsidence from over-taxing groundwater supplies. During this internship, Geneva hopes to gain a more well-rounded knowledge of environmental issues and develop leadership skills. When not at Welty, she loves to spend time with her Golden-Retriever-Bernese-Mountain-Dog mix named Finley and her Great-Pyrenees-Anatolian-Shepherd mix named Apollo.

We couldn’t do what we do without our interns. We’re so grateful for the time they are spending with us. Here’s to Summer 2023!
