Friends of the Welty Environmental Center, Inc. Annual Meeting
Guest speaker: Paul Kinzer, Amateur Astronomer and Author
Finish your full weekend of Earth Day celebrations by attending the FWEC annual meeting. After a brief business meeting we will enjoy conversation and light refreshments.
Our guest speaker this year is Paul Kinzer, an amateur astronomer and author who will talk us through the night sky. Here is some information from Paul’s website:
If the Starlab Planetarium is the “heart” of Seeing Stars, its director, Paul Kinzer, is the “head”. A 1984 graduate of the University of Minnesota at Morris, Paul has over 25 years of experience working with children of all ages. He designed and directed a summer nature study program for Minneapolis Kids, the School-Age Care Program of the Minneapolis Public Schools. He’s been an avid amateur astronomer for nearly 20 years, and currently owns about a dozen telescopes telescopes, several of which he built himself.
Paul is also the author of Stargazing Basics: Getting Started in Recreational Astronomy, from Cambridge University Press. Paul designed a short class based on the book, which was offered by Western Technical College in La Crosse, Wisconsin. He’s been a guest several times on the Wisconsin Public Radio Ideas Network program Conversations with Larry Meiller, to talk about astronomy and to answer callers’ questions.
Paul enjoys the challenge of astrophotography, and he took all the astrophotos you see on this website. He is a member of the La Crosse Area Astronomical Society.
This event is free!
Keep up on what has been happening and is being planned at Welty, meet your board members, and learn about the cosmos. This is a great way to cap off your Earth Day weekend!

Friends of the Welty Environmental Center Membership and Volunteer Annual Appreciation Event
The Welty Environmental Center is able to bring hands-on environmental education to over 6,000 people throughout the Stateline area every year, and we could not do this without YOUR support! We want to thank you for all you do throughout the year with an end of summer celebration. Come out to the pavilion at Beckman Mill County Park with the whole family. We will be roasting hot dogs for our main course in the picnic supper, making s’mores, and enjoying the park and each other’s company. Bring a friend that you have always wanted to introduce to Welty. Lena will be leading hikes through the savanna, wetland boardwalk and wooded trail. Lawn games will be available to help you enjoy the evening even more. Bring your calendar to write down all the fun events that are coming up this fall too. Picnic tables are available, but you may want to bring folding chairs as well. This event is free!
Call 608-361-1377 for information. No registration needed.

Annual Maple Sugar Festival
Has it been a long winter inside? Pack up the whole family and head to Big Hill Park for Welty Environmental Center’s Annual Maple Sugar Festival and Brunch!
Your FREE admission to the festival includes tours of the sugar bush to see maple trees being tapped, a look at the evaporator as the sap cooks into syrup, horse-drawn wagon rides to and from the sugar bush, and fun games and activities for the kids.
For a fee ($7 per adult, $6 per Welty member, $3 per child) you can enjoy an all-you can enjoy a fresh-cooked brunch – fresh, hot pancakes, sausage, fruit, cookie, and your choice of hot chocolate or coffee, served, of course, with REAL maple syrup. Brunch will be served inside the Girl Scout building near the entrance to the park. Hogback Haven farms will have real maple syrup for sale, while it lasts, to take home.
Spend a morning taking part in a tradition as old as the woods!
Call (608) 361-1377 or email info@weltycenter.org for more information.
No registration necessary – Just come out and enjoy!
